Giving Notice

So I quit my job.

Long story short; at the expense of my parents pride and my wife’s mental health, I have made a rather drastic life decision and changed career paths, a change that quite frankly surprised me too. I’ve had my fair share of issues with my workplace, which probably made the decision easier to make, and although I feel like this change will be better for me in the long term, it was still a strange experience.

It’s an adult job, which means that quitting now just means I stop working in two weeks. I never understood the concept of a two-week notice. Seems like a courtesy that was created in some corporate mass-psychology lab with the purpose of only benefiting the employer. They can fire me any day they want, but somehow it’s rude to not tell them two weeks in advance that I’m leaving. Not only does that seem like a disproportionate distribution of social responsibilities, it’s a phenomenon that only occurs in the work environment.

We don’t do that in any other aspect of our personal life.

Imagine if we gave notice in relationships – “Hey babe, I don’t think we are going to work out together, so let’s hang around like nothing happened for two weeks and then never talk to each other again. Anyway, did you walk the dog?”

Something tells me that wouldn’t fly.

I had to write a letter of resignation. I’m not sure why they need that in writing. It’s not like I’m going to show up in two weeks like “Psych bitches!” I think a phone call would have been enough.

After submitting my letter of resignation I got a call from my supervisor. We had a pleasant exchange, she and I always got along, but she ends the call with – “Well, I expect you put in some long hours and hard work so you can get caught up before your last day.” – Which made me think she didn’t read my letter. Because if she had read my letter, she would know I’m trying to do the exact opposite of that. In fact, I’m trying not to work at this place at all. That’s like suggesting couples therapy, after signing the divorce papers – aren’t we a little past that point?

Anyhow, my last day was yesterday and in three days I start at my new job. I will be writing marketing content for a growing digital marketing company. I’m excited about doing something that forces me write every day even if it’s about butt plugs… actually, I really hope I have to write about butt plugs… not because I have experience in the topic, but because it would be a funny thing to write about…. Seriously guys, I don’t use butt plugs… For real….

    1. Thank you! Sorry that it took me so long to finally see this but I guess now I can say with full certainty that there have been Zero butt plugs… Thus far … Kinda disappointed but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
